Simplifying Child Support Calculation: A 3-Stage Process

Calculating child support is typically straightforward in most cases. The Federal Child Support Guidelines were designed to ensure fair determination of support levels. Non-custodial parents are generally expected to contribute to their children's support based on their own income, with less emphasis on the custodial parent's income. These Guidelines are mandatory for child support applications under the Divorce Act and the Family Law Act.

The calculation involves three stages:

1) determining the basic support amount using tables,

2) considering additional expenses, and

3) assessing potential undue hardship.

Some adjustments may be necessary if specific factors apply, such as shared parenting time, multiple custodial parents, children over 18, or a payor's income exceeding $150,000.
